Kill Your Boyfriend is a Post-Punk/Industrial duo from Venice. That might initially sound quite strange to some, but is a fairly relatable thing if you are hailing from Salzburg. Where we are at. Both areas, although very much known for their musical affiliations in the form of mainly Vivaldi and Mozart, are not necessarely believed to have a thriving alternative scene. On a larger scale I’d say the same holds true for the respective countries, italy and austria.
Whilst talking to Matteo and Antonio, the two heads behind Kill Your Boyfriend, we figured it might be interesting to hear about some of their favorite current italian titles. So a list is what they sent us.
Read about it below!
“We would not like to stop at listing albums or songs of historical groups that have influenced us and that indirectly contributed to the creation of “Killadelica”, as they are bands that we consider “classics”. In our opinion they need no introduction. We are thinking about bands as Suicide, The Velvet Underground, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division or other more contemporary ones such as King Dude or A Place to Bury Strangers.
Instead, we would like to focus on Italian groups that we feel similar to, even if perhaps they haven’t influenced us purely.”
HIS ELECTRO BLUE VOICE – BODY CRASH (2021)
We love HEBV since their very first works! Among other things, one of their albums has also been released by Sub Pop. We chose this recently released song because we really appreciate their power and their skill in always finding new sounds.
HOLIDAY INN – DIRTY TOWN (2018)
Obviously, since we like Suicide, we can’t help but adore Holiday Inn. A No-wave band from Rome that we met often on tour. We are always amazed by the strong punk attitude of their live shows and their super distorted sounds. This track is an explosion of dirty blues that makes you want to rock it all.
NEW CANDYS – DARK LOVE (2015)
We have known New Candys for a long time, we live in the same area. They don’t need much introduction given their large international following.
We chose this song from the 10″ Double A-side split album released by Shyrec in 2016 as we shared it with them. They recently released their new album” Vyvyd “which we recommend giving a spin.
JULIE’S HAIRCUT – UNTIL THE LIGHTS GO OUT (2019)
They are one of the Italian psych bands that we most appreciate. They have a sublime ability to create lysergic and intriguing atmospheres. They have a sound that we can hardly find in Italy and their lives are truly remarkable.
FATHER MURPHY – WE NOW PRAY WITH TWO HANDS, WE KNOW PRAY WITH TRUE ANGER (2017)
We are very attached to this song, but also to the band, that we consider one of the most interesting of the Italian contemporary scene (although no longer in business for a couple of years).
We love the dark climax of the song, but above all we love how Father Murphy has always been at the forefront of musical research and in the creation of ever new and complex imaginaries.
TALK TO HER – IBISCO (2020)
Talk to Her is a New-Wave derivation band. Matteo collaborated in the production of their first album “Love Will Come Again”, where this song is from. It’s a mix of rock and electronics with a punchy, well-defined rhythm that accompanies a catchy synth and guitar riff.
SOVIET SOVIET – ENDLESS BEAUTY (2017)
A post-punk band that surely many of you will already know, given their international fame. With them we have pleasantly shared various stages in Italy and europe. We are fond of this song having often heard it play in our lives.
THE GLUTS – LOVE ME DO AGAIN (2021)
In the last pre-lockdown period we often shared the stage with them and we got to know and appreciate them, not only as artists but also as pleasant people. This song is from their latest album “Ungrateful Heart” to be released on October 8th on Fuzz Club.
